The ILO’s Better Regional Migration Management (BRMM) Programme and the Free Movement of Persons and Transhumance in the IGAD Region (FMPT-II) Project, in partnership with the ITCILO and IGAD, delivered a regional training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, aimed at enhancing the ability of IGAD Member States to negotiate and implement rights-based Bilateral Labour Agreements (BLAs).
Through this initiative, government representatives and technical experts from across the region built practical skills in fair recruitment, labour standards, and the protection of migrant workers. By strengthening national and regional capacity to design and operationalize BLAs grounded in decent work principles, the main goal of the training was to ensure safer migration pathways, improved labour governance, and more equitable outcomes for workers and employers.
This effort forms part of ongoing cooperation between ILO and IGAD to promote fair recruitment, reinforce labour mobility frameworks, and advance decent work for migrant workers throughout the region.
